We collaborated with Assembly Market (吹雞之「市.集」) in Toronto and creative agency 852Tangram to develop a character that would become the soul of the event. What started as a simple 3D model request turned into a full-blown mascot design rooted in Cantonese culture — and Whistle the Chicken was born.
Bringing Wordplay to Life
In 2023, 852Tangram reached out with a fun idea: create a 3D whistle for use in an Instagram filter promoting Assembly Market — a pop-up event celebrating local makers and cultural creativity. But the phrase “吹雞” (chēui gāi), commonly used in Cantonese to mean “assemble,” planted a silly and irresistible idea in our heads.
“吹雞” literally translates to “blow chicken,” which sparked Kenith’s imagination. What if… it wasn’t just a whistle? What if it was a whistle-chicken hybrid? Instead of a generic object, we could give the event a mascot with personality, humor, and cultural flair.
Goodbye Muscular Rooster, Hello Whistle the Chicken
The earliest client concept was a bold, muscular rooster — a very literal take on the “chicken” idea. But we wanted to go in a different direction: one that felt friendly, memorable, and distinctly fun.
We designed a chubby, bright yellow chick shaped like a whistle, with tiny wings and a cheeky expression. The form functioned both as a recognizable whistle and a mascot full of life. From there, we developed 3D character modeling and animation to make the little guy come alive on screen — and in hearts.
A Mascot That Rallied the Crowd
Whistle the Chicken quickly became the visual icon for Assembly Market. Beyond digital use, the mascot appeared on marketing materials, event visuals, and even as a pin worn by volunteers — making it a symbol of the community’s energy and playful spirit.
This project wasn’t just about making something cute — it was about building a character that embodied the vibe and voice of the event. From inside jokes in the Cantonese-speaking community to universal visual charm, Whistle struck a balance that connected with everyone.
What the Client Said
Hei Kenith Creative played a pivotal role in shaping the visual identity of Assembly Market. Their ability to transform 2D character concepts into a compelling 3D signature figure gave the market a recognizable and memorable face. The animation they developed brought the character to life and became a core element of the market’s branding and storytelling. Their work not only elevated the visual appeal but also helped define the spirit of the market in a way that deeply resonates with the community. We’re thankful for their creativity, collaboration, and craft.
Why We Loved This Project
This is exactly the kind of project we live for — where creativity meets culture and a simple ask turns into a quirky icon that people remember. Whistle the Chicken isn’t just a mascot. He’s a tiny, tweet-sized symbol of how good ideas — and great collaboration — can bring a community together.
